Shopify recently announced its commitment to becoming a carbon neutral company.
How It Works
The details of Shopify's carbon neutrality program are outlined in its Climate Action Plan, which sets out an ambitious timeline for reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. In the short term, Shopify plans on reducing its scope 1 and scope 2 emissions (those associated with direct energy use) by 50% over the next five years. Additionally, they intend to invest in renewable energy projects that will offset their remaining emissions and make them a net zero company.
Shopify estimates that their efforts will result in a reduction of more than 600,000 tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) per year by 2026—the equivalent of taking 130,000 cars off the road for an entire year! By investing in renewable energy sources and committing to reducing their own emissions, Shopify is helping to fight climate change on two fronts—by decreasing their own impact and helping to create a bigger market for renewable energy sources.
Shopify's Carbon Neutral Initiative is an example of what can be achieved when businesses make conscious decisions about climate change and commit themselves to doing something about it. By investing in renewable energy sources and setting ambitious targets for reducing their own emissions, they are setting an important example that we hope other companies will follow suit. We applaud Shopify's efforts towards sustainability and encourage everyone who cares about our planet's future to get involved in similar initiatives too!
